Her father worked as a dealer of used cars. Her mother was the daughter of a German immigrant who came to the United States in 1958. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1989, and died after battling cancer for ten years. Her father was Jewish as was her mother. She brought to Reform Judaism. Handler enjoyed a pleasant and healthy childhood growing up in an affluent area. As she entered her twenties Handler moved to Los Angeles in order to pursue acting. Handler started acting to earn income. Handler's ability to write stories came into play when she reached 21. Handler then decided to dedicate her entire career in stand-up comedy. Handler's stand-up career began when she was part of the all-female Oxygen TV show in the reality show with a hidden camera and practical humor series Girls Behaving Unstably. The show ran from 2002 until 2005. The host began to appear on various other programs such including Weekends at D.L., The Bernie Mac Show, The Practice and My Wife and Kids. Handler was also a a corresponded for The Tonight Show. Handler made her breakthrough in 2006 when she began host her own program on E! The Chelsea Handler Program. The Chelsea Handler show ran for two years. Handler performed on Comedy Central's Hour Stand-Up Comedy Tour the following season in the United States. VH1, Comedy Central Premium Blend & HBO have broadcast Handler's standup performance. In 2010 she was selected for the role of host at 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. As a result, she became the first female host to be announced in the same category as Roseanne.
